High waist or low waist? Skinny leg or wide leg? Who hasn’t been there, a shopping afternoon turning to a depressing day after trying on trousers that didn’t fit us?
Of course there are many factors to be considered when looking for the perfect pair of trousers (such as overall proportions and body line, legs length, etc…) but here are a few guidelines to help you choose the right trousers cut for your body shape.
Prioritize luxurious materials
There is nothing worse than a bad polyester imitation of genuine satin. Generally speaking, opt for quality rather than quantity: a gorgeous pair of trousers can really enhance your silhouette, but the contrary is also possible with a low range piece. Buy the best quality you can afford.
1. If you are petite and slim
Avoid flared cuts, they wouldn’t do you justice. However, low waist trousers are ideal for narrow hips. Tailored cigarette pants or slim jeans will highlight your thin legs. Avoid shoes that are too pointy with narrow trousers to avoid the giant feet look.
2. If you are tall and slim
Beware of the low waist trousers which risk to cut your silhouette. Why not go for a tummy hugging high waist? Really trendy with a simple top tucked in the trousers. If you like the extra wide cuts, don’t hesitate, this cut is made for you.
3. If you are curvy
Generally speaking, avoid the wide legs trousers which will thicken your silhouette. A high waist will camouflage the baby tummy or love handles. A straight cut in dark colours will lengthen your legs. And if you don’t like your thighs, use and abuse the blouses and tunics which look great with straight cut trousers.
4. If you are very thin
For the girls out there who want to bulk up their silhouette, wear straight cut trousers in bright colours. The bleach effect on certain jeans will also tend to give curves to your legs. The glitz and patterns will also give more volume, but beware of the “Christmas tree look”. Also don’t forget the sarouel (also called low crotch or harem pants) trousers, which will enhance slim and athletic legs.
Either way, if you’re not happy with a fit, move on, try on another pair and just tell yourself that it is the trousers that are wrong, not you!
