Sonya Lennon

Sonya Lennon

Sonya Lennon is widely regarded as one of Ireland's top fashion stylists, having established a reputation for creative excellence over almost twenty years. Her work is distinguished by a meticulous attention to detail for fashion and styling and intuitive awareness of the demands of each production. Coupled with Sonya's reputation in the fashion industry, she is fast being recognized as a leading Costume Designer in Film and more recently Theatre.

Her styling and editorial work is clearly recognisable by the continuous use of narrative as a key creative tool in the development and creation of original fashion stories for Irish and international publications. Her reputation and experience has enabled her to not only manage the fashion and styling for many of her clients but to art direct, conceive and produce all aspects of the fashion stories - this alone marks her out as being unique amongst her peers.

While her editorial work reflects the cutting edge of her practice her portfolio of work has broadened to include costume for television, costume design for film and stage, styling for advertising and production for fashion shows. Since its beginning, Sonya has been a regular contributor to RTÉ's Off the Rails, and is currently presenting the newly formatted series with co-presenter Brendan Courtney.

We are delighted that Sonya has taken time out from her busy schedule to give our Chiconomics readers some key advise that will help in creating your own sense of style.

First Fashion Memory?

Having a tantrum in Arnotts aged 6 until my Mum bought me a fake fur hooded coat with pom poms and leatherette panelling. Enough said.

Favourite Designer Label?

I adore the ethos of Sonia Rykiel main label. A beautiful marriage of classic french styling, bold sensuality and fun. They are clothes for the life I'd like to lead.

What’s on the top of your wish list at the moment?

Actually, I just ticked it off today. The RM by Roland Mouret powermesh slip. It's genius, full body streamlining for under the tightest frock. It also looks sexy, a
huge bonus in the ugly world of support garments.

Favourite High-Street Store?

I love TopShop. Lately, though, I've found some killer pieces from H&M.

Most treasured piece?

Very difficult one to answer. I put things away vacuum packed and then pull them out of storage years later, so I'm always finding little specials that I'd forgotten
about. I call it cupboard shopping. I didn't lick it off the stones though, I recently found a fabulous burgandy jumpsuit in my Mum's attic, coming to an event near you soon.

What’s your favourite item of clothing in your wardrobe and where did you get it?

My screen husband Mr. Courtney bought me a vintage hat from 1970's New York for my 40th. It's stunning. I googled the designer and ended up in email
communication with him. He remembered not only the exact hat, the show and season it was debuted but how long it took him to make it. I love when
something beautiful can be contextualized by the human connection.

What’s your favourite boutique?

Colette in Paris, Luisa via Roma in Florence and Costume in my home town.

What’s your biggest style weakness?

Not original but shoes.

Can you remember the biggest fashion faux paux you have every made?

I pride myself on having made many, especially in my youth. If you can't take risks then you can't find your own true style. Better to have loved and lost.....

From your experience with Off the Rails and your work in the industry over the years, what are the key mistakes women often make when choosing an outfit?

I think it's easy to be captivated by trends, however, true style transcends fashion. Find out what works for you and your body shape and use that as a guideline for looking good.

Stranded on a dessert Island...what makeup products could you not live without?

Chanel Essential SPF50, Elizibeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, NV Perricone Lip Balm

How would you describe your style?

Sensual, fun and colourful.

What’s the best bargin you’ve ever nabbed?

An Emmanuel Ungaro silk jersey cocktail dress for €50 in Rathdowney Outlet Village

What is the most admired piece in your wardrobe?

Every time I wear apiece of Tim Ryan I get huge compliments.

Where was the last sale you blitzed?

I always get great goodies at the Havana sale, Nikki Creedon knows how to blitz!

What was the last item you bought and where?

RM slip as discussed. Before that a great long cardigan with puff shoulders from H&M

Do you shop on-line? If so what’s your favourite website, if not, why?

I love Ebay, now that's the worldwide web! I love Polyvore because they round up all the best fashion stores worldwide and present them neatly on a plate.

Most Expensive Item in your Wardrobe?

I have some lovely jewllery. Above that, a RM by Roland Mouret dress.

And if you’re feeling brave tell us how much it cost?

I think that would be indiscreet ( and easily googled!)

Do you have a favourite place to get your hair done?

Zara Cox in Queen does my hair. It's not my favorite place, it's my only place.

Share your best fashion tip?

Dress for your own amusement.

Do you have any beauty secrets?

Stress wrecks your skin. exercise renews it. Products make you feel better.

What’s your most memorable fashion moment?

I loved my outfit for last years Meteor Awards. An exquisite Tim Ryan dress, he's a close friend, how lucky am I!?

What should every woman have in their wardrobe?

A dress that makes them feel like 'Queen of the Night'

What’s your best last minute tip for feeling fabulous on the inside at an event or party?

Get ready with the girls, have a pre-party party. A few bubbles help!

Finally, how has the recession affected how you shop?

I'm a careful shopper at the best of times. I found the whole It-Bag thing disgusting, I don't like the idea of being told what item to buy in order to be perceived
as 'Cool'. I didn't go bonkers at the height of it, so actually, not too much.
